How do others back up their files? Do you just save the GEDCOM? What other programs do others use to view your GEDCOM? I use PhyGedView, a horribly difficult program to install.

It's no official announcement and I can't predict any release date, but we're working on our own offline genealogy application. With that, you can download your family tree and work offline on your tree.
Stay tuned, I'll announce it as soon as possible.

Christian,

I am anxiously awaiting your desktop program. Other people may have seen MyHeritage.com. That company has deployed a desktop program called My Family Tree. It is supposed to merge the Internet program and the desktop. I assume this is the same concept Itsourtree.com is planning and what Geni.com promised months ago.

As an international site, MyHeritage.com has more language translations than Itsourtree.com. It appears not to be so European oriented. What is so perplexing is that currently MyHeritage.com's GEDCOM upload and the My Family Tree program do not support Unicode (but the on-line program does displays Unicode characters). I find this rather strange for an international site and is probably a programming error.

Lets hope you support Unicode in both directions with your desktop program. Lets also hope you have more languages supported. I hope you do this before the competition does.
