Sunny pregnancy preferred…

…because babies born by the end of summer or early autumn are bigger and have stronger bones than babies born in winter and spring. This is the conclusion of Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a study by the University of Bristol that was released last week.

The reason is vitamin D, since it is responsible for the formation of bone. Sunlight, according to the researchers, has a positive influence on the production of vitamin D during pregnancy. The scientists in Bristol investigated 7,000 cases of births from 1991 to 1992.

Result: the babies of women who have longer periods of sun exposure were in average of 0.5 cm bigger and had about 12,75 cm² more bone mass!

Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin

200 years ago the British naturalist Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury England. His work “The Origin of Species” and the contributions to the theory of evolution made him one of the greatest scientists of all time.

When Darwin started his nearly five-year research trip on the survey ship HMS Beagle in 1831, he could not foresee how revolutionary his discovery 20 years later would be. Darwin collected thousands of different plants and animals on his trip to South America and developed his theory of the origin of species.

Nowadays, we can not quite understand the impact on the Christian world caused by his theory. It meant nothing less than the negation of the doctrine of creation and the fact that man derives from ape. Despite his “scandalous” discoveries, he was buried in London’s most famous church, Westminster Abbey. An unmistakable sign that even during his lifetime, the theory of evolution could no longer be denied.

Charles Darwin died in Downe on 19th of April, 1882. His complete works can be accessed here.

12 fingers!

A baby recently born in San Francisco has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on its hands and feet. Kaman Hubbard looks so normal with his extra fingers that in the beginning, not even his parents noticed the unusual number of fingers and toes. His father’s fingers aren’t well-developed either, but with one big difference: the father’s fingers were not functional and had to be removed. Now we wish all the best for the child that could become an extraordinary pianist or a flamenco guitarist!

The dynastree surname maps!

Where do Barack Obama’ relatives live? Is the name “Bush” really from Texas? With our brand new surname maps for the United States these questions can be answered. On dynastree.com/maps you will find over 1.7 million maps with the geographical distribution of surnames in the United States of America.

usa_karten3

The results are divided into the 50 states (+ Washington D.C.) and available in both the absolute and relative distribution of the last name. The absolute distribution shows how many people with a certain last name live in a state. The relative distribution tells you how many people are there in proportion to the population of each state.

The page shows you further data on the name (how many directory entries are there with the name? In what state does the name occur most frequently? …), too.

Besides the US surname maps we also have the maps for Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Poland.

Continental Evolution

As seen in countless Discovery Channel documentaries: the tectonic plates have always been moving and will keep moving as long as the Earth exists. Many, many generations ago, our prehistoric “ancestors” could move freely from one end of the land to the other, as there was only one supercontinent: Pangaea. This is seen as the explanation for the synchronic evolution of men in different parts of the world and common genes all around the globe. The video below shows the tectonic plates’ movement in the future as well as in the past. A very short and entertaining history lesson. :-)

Pollday again! Last week’s poll was about genealogical societies. We were quite surprised by the fact that about 24% of our voters are members and another 36% are currently planning to become one.

This week, where you got your cooking skills from. Is it your Grandma or the latest cooking show on TV? Family traditions manifest in several ways. Some are lost in time and others are grown for generations and centuries. One of the most popular transmissions of traditions is a recipe from Grandma. dynastree wants to know: You have these recipes stored somewhere and pass them on in the family?
